In their final scene, the Doctor meets up with Rose in the parallel universe she is trapped in and the companion is snivelling as the Doctor states that she is dead back on planet Earth so she can’t go home. ‘Am I ever going to see you again?’ asks Rose. ‘You can’t’, replies the Doctor. The accompanying orchestral music grows gradually louder as the scene develops and ‘cradles’ Rose’s declaration of love for the Doctor. The Doctor looks meaningfully at
Rose and, in a proposal-like manner, starts to say, ‘Rose Tyler…’ But then his presence dissolves and Rose begins to weep uncontrollably. Thankfully the music drowns out her unstoppable snotty outburst. At this point, families around the country became teary eyed and grown men sobbed into their half-eaten takeaway curries. This is probably one of the saddest departures between the Doctor and his companion, no doubt why it was voted into the ‘Top 10’ Doctor Who all time favourites list. For me, the importance of this scene is in finding out that the alien Doctor is a man with a heart (or two) and as we all know folks, a true man is one in touch with his own feelings…
